Sneaky Snacks: Four Ingredient Crackers

A Food Sensitive Recipe Review Series

You heard that right FOUR ingredients - that's it!!! Water, oil, GF flour and salt - simple as that. This GF, DF cracker recipe is from Dish by Dish and it is the first recipe in the new Sneaky Snack review. For the full recipe check out the link above. Let's get into it!

Price:

There are literally only FOUR ingredients and almost ALL of them are in your pantry already, guarantee. The only item I purchased specifically for this recipe was a gluten free flour mix to ensure it had xanthin gum (this is a must). The batch yielded around 36 crackers which is not quite comparable to a box you would buy at the store, but the receipt can be made over and over without needing to buy new ingredients making it crazy cheap.

Taste:

The flavor of these crackers are pretty basic. I chose to add in a healthy shake of everything seasoning and would probably add in double next time to really taste it. The genius with this recipe is all the ways you can vary the taste, adding in any seasoning of your choice - the possibilities are endless. I will caution you, you need to roll the dough out THIN if you don't want rock hard crackers (a lesson I learned on my first batch). Overall, I really loved the taste, especially paired with a DF cream cheese spread (I said I was reducing my processed foods not eliminating them).

Ease/time:

While I chose to use some *advanced* cooking devices (a stand mixer, pizza cutter to cut the crackers, chop stick for the holes) you could absoultely make these with minimal equipment ie. a bowl and spoon to stir. You do need some sort of rolling pin but when in doubt a wine bottle or water bottle (pre-washed obviously) work quite well. I do highly recommend not skipping the parchment paper both for rolling out and while cooking - it makes life a million times simpler which is really what it's all about. It took maybe 15 minutes max to make the dough, roll it out, poke the hole and put the crackers in the over. Once cooked (another 10 min) they were ready to eat almost immediately. This recipe is in fact so easy my BF could do it.

Overall "Sneaky" Score

6. Offer to share the snack with your boyfriend

Wrap Up:

These crackers are such a simple way to start making your own gf/df snacks at home. There are endless possibilities for the flavors and color creations you can come up with. If you have kids this would be a fantastic hands on baking activity to do together. While it took some trial and error to nail down the thin-ness of the crackers, I ate all of them within 3 days - even the extra crunchy ones. All in all, this recipe is a must try...unless you hate crackers.
